Why senior cats need annual bloodwork
Cats hide illness well. Chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes are common in cats over 10 — and all three are far cheaper to manage when caught at the bloodwork stage instead of after symptoms. AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines recommend annual screening for adult cats and twice-yearly exams (with bloodwork) for seniors.
Insurance note
Diagnostic bloodwork for known illness is usually covered after deductible. Wellness/screening bloodwork usually requires a wellness add-on.
FAQ
What's SDMA and why is it on the bill?
SDMA detects early kidney function loss before traditional creatinine. It's now a routine line item in many feline senior wellness panels.
